When the Church Sings Back

Colossians 3:15-16 - And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

Some Sundays are the hardest days of my week.

As a pastor, I can feel as though I’m not allowed to have a bad day on Sunday. I need to lead. I need to be present for people who have carried the weight of their own weeks into church. Whatever I am bringing with me often seems like something I ought to set aside before I walk through the door. But needing to serve doesn’t remove my need for Jesus. I need Him to remind me that He can do what I cannot. I can’t manufacture the life our church needs or become sufficient for everyone who comes. He is sufficient, and I need to receive from Him as surely as anyone else in the room.

Then I hear the congregation sing.

Those voices remind me how true and ancient and beautiful the gathered church is. We’re part of something far larger than my sermon preparation or anyone’s particular week. Generations before us have gathered around this same Savior. Across the world, people we’ve never met are trusting the Lord whose name we sing. And here, in this room, I belong among them. I’m receiving the truth I have come to proclaim.

Paul tells the church to let the peace of Christ rule in their hearts, then reminds them that they were called in one body. He tells them to let Christ’s word dwell richly among them, and singing is part of how that happens. The words on another believer’s lips can help me remember what is true when my own thoughts have become crowded. That is a gift Christ gives through His people. A congregation is so much more than an audience waiting for the pastor to supply something. We belong to one another in Him. As we sing His truth, the weary receive help remembering, and the grateful give voice to mercies the rest of us need to hear.

At the end of the encounter in Luke 7, Jesus sends the woman away in peace. She has His assurance of forgiveness. We gather this morning because the same Savior has borne our sin at the cross and risen to bring us to God. We have a reason to sing long before we’ve managed to put every part of our week in order. Come to worship with things unresolved. Bring your need. Hear the words being sung. Let Scripture address you. Receive prayer if you need it. Christ’s care can reach you through someone sitting nearby.

This morning, I will need Jesus. So will you. We get to gather in His name, hear His Word, and remind one another of the love that is still changing us. You belong among the people receiving Christ’s care, even when you’re leading them.

Head: Christ sustains His people through His Word, through the Spirit, and through the body to which He has joined us.

Heart: Where have I assumed that serving others means concealing my own need for Jesus?

Hands: Receive one truth from what we sing this morning. Carry it into a genuine conversation with someone, sharing why Christ’s mercy matters to you.

Prayer: “Lord Jesus, thank You that I belong among the people You sustain. Let Your Word reach me through the Scriptures and the voices of Your gathered church today. Free me to receive the care I need. Make our worship and our conversations a warm invitation for others to know You. Amen.”
