We Come Empty
Philippians 4:13 - I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
A lamp can fill an entire room with light, but it can’t produce a single watt of power on its own. Its brightness is borrowed. Unplug it from the source, and even the most expensive lamp goes dark. Well, the same is true of us. We were never created to manufacture the strength life requires. We were created to receive it from Christ. Yet after a week of carrying responsibilities, navigating difficult conversations, absorbing disappointments, and trying to remain steady for others, it’s easy to forget where our strength comes from.
Sunday morning brings us back to the Source. The church isn’t a gathering of people who proved they were strong enough to make it through another week. We gather because none of us is the source, and because Christ has promised to meet His needy people together. That’s why corporate worship is such a needed interruption to self-sufficiency. We stand next to people whose circumstances differ from ours, yet we confess the same dependence. One person sings after a joyful week; another can barely form the words. One arrives with abundance; another is frightened by a need no one else can see. Together we hear Scripture, receive prayer, remember the cross, and declare that Christ is enough for all of us!
This morning, bring your actual need into the room. You don’t need to pretend before God. Let another voice carry the song when yours feels weak. Let someone pray for you. Receive the sermon as bread rather than information. Come to the Lord’s Table with empty hands. And in doing these things, remember that even the church isn’t the power source. Churches fail, leaders disappoint, and gathered worship can’t substitute for Christ. But Jesus has chosen to meet His people through His Word, through His Spirit, and through His body. A coal separated from the fire cools quickly, but when it’s placed among other burning coals, it receives heat while giving heat away.
At the center of our worship stands a Savior who emptied Himself. Jesus took the form of a servant, humbled Himself to death, and was raised and exalted by the Father. We gather beneath His name because His finished work, not our weekly performance, has opened the Father’s house. So come to church today needy. Come grateful. Come tired of carrying the sentence “I have to hold everything together.” Philippians 4:13 is the confession of Christ’d body: through Him, we can remain faithful in every condition He gives. When the church sings today, listen for the sound of dependence becoming praise!
Head: Gathered worship is a weekly declaration that no believer is self-sustaining and Christ supplies what His people need.
Heart: What am I tempted to conceal this morning because I want to appear stronger than I actually feel?
Hands: Attend worship with one deliberate act of dependence — ask someone to pray for you, sing one truth you need to borrow, or tell a trusted believer where you need Christ's strength.
Prayer: “Lord Jesus, I come to worship with empty hands. Thank You that Your finished work welcomes needy people into the Father's presence. Strengthen me through Your Word, Your Spirit, and the brothers and sisters gathered around me. Turn our shared dependence into praise that makes much of Your sufficiency. Amen.”
