The Life Beneath Your Life
John 15:5 - I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
Cut flowers can fool you for a while. Placed in clean water beneath good light, they may look as alive as the flowers still rooted outside. The color remains and the petals stay open. For a few days, the disconnection from the source appears to have no consequence. Then the borrowed beauty begins to fade. Jesus chose a similar image: “I am the vine; you are the branches.” A branch doesn’t occasionally consult the vine for advice. It has no independent life to improve itself. Sap, strength, growth, and fruit arrive through its union with the vine. “Apart from me you can do nothing” is not an insult to human ability, but a description of spiritual reality. The branch’s need is continuous, because the life it receives is continuous.
We can accomplish a lot of impressive things while functionally disconnected from Christ. A person can build a company, raise money, preach a sermon, manage a household, or serve a ministry through talent, adrenaline, fear, and habit. The petals may hold their color for a while. Yet activity isn’t the same as fruit, nor is usefulness the same as life. Self-sufficiency is especially difficult to detect when it’s succeeding. Prayer shortens because competence seems to be working. Rest feels irresponsible. Other people become interruptions or instruments. We might say we’re serving Jesus even though we’re really drawing energy from approval, urgency, or the need to prove that we’re indispensable.
At Bayside, we describe the opposite posture as a Surrendered Servant, one who continuously makes oneself available to Jesus while allowing Him to live His life through them. And the order matters immensely! The Christian life isn’t an exhausted self trying to imitate Jesus from a distance. It’s the indwelling Christ expressing His life through a person who is available to Him! This is the grammar of Galatians 2:20: “It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.” Your personality doesn’t disappear annd your effort isn’t meaningless. But the source changes. Obedience becomes participation in a life you receive rather than a spiritual performance you generate.
Jesus secured that union at enormous cost. On the cross He entered the severing our sin deserved, crying out beneath abandonment, so that those joined to Him would never be cut off from the Father’s love. In the resurrection He became the living source of a new humanity. The life flowing into the branch is crucified-and-risen life. So, your first move today isn’t exertion, but availability. Remain. Ask. And receive. Let the hidden life of Christ become the life beneath your visible life.
Head: The Christian life isn’t your strength offered to Christ but Christ's life expressed through your availability.
Heart: What has captured my attention and energy so completely that I’m trying to carry it without consciously receiving Christ’s life?
Hands: Before beginning your next responsibility, open your hands and pray, “Jesus, I am available. Live Your life through me here.” Pause long enough to mean it.
Prayer: “Jesus, I confess how easily I preserve the appearance of life while operating apart from You. Thank You for bearing separation at the cross so that I could be joined to You forever. Quiet my annxious efforts and make me genuinely available to Your indwelling life. Amen.”
