Made For Someone
Colossians 1:16 - All things were created through him and for him.
Walk into a guitar maker’s workshop and nearly everything has a purpose. The curve of the body, the pattern of the bracing, the thickness of the wood, and the tension of the strings have been chosen so the instrument can resonate. A guitar may be polished, expensive, and displayed beneath perfect lighting. But if it’s never tuned and never played, its beauty remains unfinished. It was made for music.
Colossians makes an even larger claim about you: all things were created through Christ and for Christ. “Through him” tells us where we came from. “For him” tells us where we’re going. Jesus isn’t an accessory added to an otherwise self-directed life. He is the origin and purpose of the whole thing! Our culture tells us that purpose must be invented. Look within, choose the identity that feels most authentic, and build a life around your preferred version of yourself. That sounds expansive, but it places an unbearable assignment on the heart. You must become both the instrument and the maker, the song and the reason it deserves to be heard.
Scripture gives you something sturdier than self-invention. Your life has a purpose you didn’t have to create. Your mind, voice, body, relationships, work, imagination, and limits were all made for Christ. This doesn’t mean every detail of your future is easy to discover, but it does mean the deepest question has already been answered. You exist for Someone! But sin detunes that purpose. We use gifts meant to honor Christ to build monuments to ourselves. We use words meant to bless in order to control. We use bodies meant for worship as instruments of appetite, image, or power. Autonomy promises that no one will tell us what song to play, then leaves every string pulled toward a different desire.
The wonder of the gospel is that the Maker didn’t discard His damaged work. The One through whom every tree was created entered creation and worked with His hands in Nazareth. The hands that shaped the world were eventually stretched across a wooden cross. There He bore the discord of our rebellion. In the resurrection, He began the restoration of all things, including us. Jesus restores you as a beloved image-bearer. Under His authority, your distinct personality isn’t erased, but tuned. The goal is to bring every Christian life into harmony with the One for whom it was made. Perhaps you’ve spent years asking, “What do I want my life to become?” Ask a prior question today: “Jesus, what was this life made to offer You?” Purpose becomes clearer when ownership becomes settled. You weren’t handed a blank existence to invent; you were given a life designed to resonate with the glory of Christ.
Head: I was created through Christ and for Christ, so the deepest purpose of my life is received, not invented.
Heart: Which gift, ambition, or part of my identity am I trying to use for myself without asking what it was made to offer Jesus?
Hands: Choose one capacity God has given you (your voice, skill, body, influence, or time) and use it today in one act that serves Christ rather than advertises you.
Prayer: “Creator Jesus, my life came through You and exists for You. Forgive me for treating Your craftsmanship as raw material for my self-made identity. Thank You for entering creation to restore what sin destroyed. Place me again in Your wise hands and draw from my life the worship You designed it to give. Amen.”
